The Turkaegean Coast

Sweeping beaches, hidden coves, archaeological treasures and whitewashed coastal villages are among the joys to be found on the Turkaegean Coast. Key resorts include Bodrum, Marmaris, Izmir and Kusadasi. The Bodrum peninsula is a magnet for holidaymakers, with superb beaches, nightlife and water sports. It is also home to one of the two Seven Wonders of the Ancient world that can be found in the Turkaegean area, the ruins of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus. The resort town of Kusadasi is a lovely place with its inviting Aegean waters, traditional meyhanes and the bird-shaped Pigeon Island featuring a walled Byzantine castle. Marmaris is home to fantastic sunbathing spots and incredible vistas, while Izmir, with its lovely beaches and lively port, has been inhabited for more than 8,500 years and is the oldest city in the region. It is also where you’ll find the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus, another of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Beach Bliss

Türkiye is blessed with hundreds of incredible beaches, with everything from secluded romantic coves and bays to huge golden expanses. Patara Beach extends an amazing 13km and is a popular choice for canoeing, surfing and horse riding. Cleopatra Beach in Alanya is thought to have been a favourite place for the legendary Egyptian queen to swim, while Iztuzu Beach in Dalyan is an idyllic spot where the river passing through the Carian tombs of Kaunos meets the sea. The beach at Ortakent near Bodrum boasts golden sands, boutique hotels and striking whitewashed buildings, while the beach at Butterfly Valley is the place to discover more than 100 species of butterfly. Oludeniz beach is another wonderful spot, with its gorgeous blue lagoon and array of boats bobbing on the seafront. Other outstanding beaches include Cirali Beach, Kaputas Beach, Icmeler Beach and Mermerli Beach.

Cultural Delights

Türkiye is a dream destination for culture vultures, with a multitude of ancient landmarks and archaeological wonders to explore. Immerse yourself in an ancient world at the old port city of Ephesus, with attractions including the Temple of Artemis, Hercules Gate and the Great Theatre. The ancient city of Xanthos, near Kinik, is home to monuments dating back to 545 BC, while Perga, near Antalya, offers amazing Roman ruins. The Temple of Apollo, in Side, which was thought to have been a gift from Anthony to Cleopatra in 150 AD, is another must-see structure. Other cultural attractions include Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology, the Greco-Roman city of Aspendos, Hadrian’s Gate at Kaleiçi Old Town and the Lycian city of Olympos. A choice of superb museums and galleries also throw light on Türkiye’s culture, while traditional favourites for foodies include Meze, Antalya Piyazi, Kabak Tatlisi and a variety of delicious seafood dishes.

BestTimeToVisit

Glorious sunshine and inviting warm waters make Turkey a great choice for a holiday all-year-round. If you want to get out and about, exploring the main cultural attractions and historic landmarks, the best time to visit is between April-May and September-October, when temperatures are typically between 20°C and 30°C. This is an excellent time to snap up a holiday deal and avoid the crowds into the bargain. The summer period from June to August sees the mercury soar, with temperatures sometimes hitting 40°C, which is more suited for lazing on the sand or taking to the sea for a refreshing swim and water sports fun. The wonderful Turkish Riviera and Turkaegean Coast enjoy more than 3,000 hours of annual sunshine, making them great choices for a holiday to remember in the great outdoors. Annual rainfall in these regions averages around 580 to 1,300 millimetres.
