Natural Wonders

The jaw-dropping landscapes and exceptional natural attractions of Jordan will take your breath away. Wadi Rum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a magnificent protected desert wilderness in southern Jordan featuring dramatic sandstone mountains and natural arches, plus steep chasms and rocky caverns bearing prehistoric carvings and inscriptions. It is also home to a natural watering hole at Lawrence’s Spring which is named after the famous British soldier, Lawrence of Arabia. Dana Biosphere Reserve comprises more than 320 square kilometres of spectacular mountains and wadis, 700 types of plant and many endangered species, including the Syrian Wolf, the Sand Cat and the Spiny Tailed Lizard. The mineral-rich Dead Sea is another enthralling natural attraction where the water’s high salinity allows you to stretch out and float on the surface. Other must-see delights include Wadi Mujib river canyon, Ajloun Forest Reserve, Azraq Wetlands and Mount Nebo.

Petra, Jordan

World-Famous Landmarks

Jordan is home to a host of spellbinding landmarks which are a magnet for visitors from around the globe. The ancient city of Petra, also known as the Rose City, is one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. Built in 300 BC by the Nabataeans people, it features temples, tombs and caves carved into the pink sandstone cliffs. Key attractions at Petra include the Treasury, the Siq, the Royal Tombs and Qasr al-Bint temple. No visit to Jordan would be complete without a day trip to the Dead Sea - a place visitors have travelled to since ancient times to enjoy the health benefits of the mineral-rich waters and mud. Other famous attractions include the Jerash Ruins, one of the world’s best-maintained ancient Roman cities, the Desert Castles in the Zarqa Governorate and the stunning 6th century floor mosaics in St George’s Church at Madaba.

Cultural attractions, Jordan

Enriching Culture

Culture vultures and history buffs will be amazed by the delights of Jordan. The capital Amman boasts a myriad of attractions and artifacts. The Citadel which towers over the city at the top of the Jabal is one of the oldest continually inhabited places in the world. Other major attractions include Umayyad Palace, a downtown Roman amphitheatre, an imposing Byzantine church and several beautiful mosques, including the majestic King Hussein Bin Talal Mosque and the blue-domed King Abdullah I Mosque. Plenty of art and culture is also on show at The Nabad Art Gallery, National Gallery of Fine Arts and Jordanian Crafts Centre, while the Souk Jara street market is the place to get a flavour of traditional life. The charming Red Sea port city of Aqaba also has its fair share of cultural joys including Aqaba Fort and the 3rd century Archaeological Church of Aqaba.

Traditional food, Jordan

Tantalising Cuisine

Jordan is a foodies’ paradise, with a plethora of places to eat, ranging from budget hummus parlours to gourmet Lebanese restaurants. Jordan's national dish Mansaf consists of rice, lamb, and fermented goat yoghurt, and is traditionally eaten by hand. A typical Jordanian breakfast is a bowl of hot fuul, a combination of boiled fava beans mashed with olive oil, lemon juice and chopped chillies. Popular street snacks include falafel, small balls of spicy deep-fried chickpea paste. Main courses in restaurants often feature a selection of dishes which are shared by diners – these include Fattoush (salad garnished with squares of fried bread), Warag Aynab (vine leaves stuffed with rice, minced vegetables or meat) and Makloubeh (root vegetables with cuts of lamb or chicken). Limonada, a refreshing mint-lemon beverage, is Jordan’s national drink, while much-loved desserts include baklava, halva and harreseh.

Jordan has a subtropical and arid climate, which means it is generally sunny, warm and dry. It experiences long and hot dry summers, with short and cool winters. The best time to visit Jordan if you want to get out and about, exploring the country's amazing attractions, is during the spring months of March to May or autumn months of September to November. Temperatures during these periods are into the high twenties, although the nights are likely to be cool. The heat in the summer months makes travelling around a real challenge, with the mercury rising in the forties, so this season is much better-suited to lazing on the beach or enjoying water sports fun. The nights get very cold in the winter months when the majority of rain falls, mainly as short and sharp downpours.
