St Lucia

The island is a duty-free shopper’s paradise with a multitude of glitzy boutiques, high-end jewellers and lively markets and shopping malls. St Lucia’s gastronomic delights are a melting pot of culinary cuisines, with everything from delicious street food stalls to gourmet restaurants for sampling the local fare.
Main resorts in St Lucia include the enthralling capital port city of Castries which is overlooked by the Morne Fortuné, a towering 825ft hill and fort; Rodney Bay with its glorious horseshoe-shaped bay, historical monuments and pristine beaches, and Soufries, which is home to the famous Pitons mountainous volcanic plugs and Sulphur Springs Park where you’ll discover the Caribbean’s only drive-in volcano.

Food & Drink

St Lucia cuisine is a subtle fusion of flavour from Caribbean, French and African cultures. Bouyon, which is a hearty one-pot soup meal made of meat, thick red beans, ground tuber foods and vegetables, while Accra is a delicious fried snack comprising saltfish, flour, egg and seasoning.

A hugely popular dish you'll find in beach cafes and restaurants is Lambi, which features heavily-spiced conch marine snails, while fried plantains are often cooked to eat on their own or as a tasty side dish for lunch or dinner. St Lucian Pepperpot is a wholesome stew featuring goat or mutton, yam, potatoes, hot pepper and seasoning.

Banana cake is a much-loved dessert on the island and rum punch is a hugely popular drink featuring local ingredients infused with spices.

Best Time

St Lucia has a tropical climate and a great time to visit is between December and March when conditions are very sunny and settled. September is the hottest month of the year, with an average daily maximum of 31°C and an average low of 26°C. January is the coolest month then the average daily maximum is 29°C, and the average low is 24°C.
The island has two distinct seasons, winter and summer, but there’s no shortage of wonderful hot and sunny days during the wetter months. St Lucia’s driest month is February when it enjoys an average of 24 sunny and 15mm average rainfall, while November is the wettest month, with around 80mm of rain. April and May are excellent months for swimming and the beaches are less crowded and water temperatures are around 27°C.

Things To See and Do

From snorkelling in the Caribbean Sea and ziplining through the rainforest to drinking sundowners at Rodney Bay and bartering for a bargain at Castries Central Market, there’s so much to see and do in this magnificent sunshine getaway. No visit to St Lucia would be complete without a trip to see the famous Pitons (Petit Piton and Gros Piton), which are twin mountainous volcanic spires majestically soaring more than 700 metres in height from the sea. Another must-see attraction is the world’s only ‘drive-in’ volcano just outside the town of Soufriere where you can enjoy a hot mud bath and witness steam escaping from volcanic fissures. Pigeon Island National Landmark is a captivating 44-acre attraction which is home to many historical military ruins, jawdropping sandy beaches and spellbinding natural spaces to explore.
Other key attractions include Toraille Waterfall, Immaculate Conception Church, the hot springs and geysers at Sulphur Springs Park and Morne Fortune, which is home to an 18th century fort and offers amazing views of Castries. Two attractions which deliver a feast of family fun are Millet Bird Sanctuary and Splash Island Water Park Saint Lucia, an open-water sports park featuring a thrilling obstacle course. Popular activities on the island include sailing, kayaking, buggy safaris, kitesurfing, mountain biking, scuba diving, hiking, golf, catamaran trips, rock climbing and canyoning.
