High tea was spot-on perfect. No other will ever compare. The view is amazing. Service was excellent. They asked about food allergies and prepared a special selection of tea sandwiches and sweets made without milk for me. Extraordinary!

We made a visit to Reid’s Palace for cocktails before we went on elsewhere to dinner. The building inside is lovely and the grounds look wonderful. The cocktails were so tasty and so were the complimentary nibbles. The whole experience was very special and the drinks were a cut above. Although we didn’t sit outside, we had a great view from the bar lounge (see photo). Staff were extremely friendly and welcoming which was nice seeing as we weren’t staying at that hotel.

Third time we’ve had afternoon tea here and somehow it seemed less special, maybe it’s familiarity I’m not sure. All the food is lovely stuff, views are peerless. I just felt the service was less than you’d expect. We were at the side of the balcony and had to chase up tea and coffee twice. Beware the invitation to have a glass of champagne before you start, that’ll be €28 per glass on top of the €45 for the afternoon tea. “Chocolate scones”? Err. No.

As I write this from the terrace of a seaview suite here at Reid's Palace, I must say that this has been one of the most wonderful experiences of my life. My views may be biased as I am not accustomed to five star hotels but this place is genuinely incredibly special. The location is outstanding, lovely Funchal is a beautiful ~10-15 minute walk away and the position that the hotel occupies on the cliffside feels far removed from other hotels and noise. The staff (and the people of Madeira in general) have all seemed genuinely kind and extremely welcoming. The people of Madeira seem to be very proud to be from here and for good reason.
The food is fresh, light, and delicious. Room service is quick and done to the highest level of elegance and class. If you ask for an extra fork they will be sure to ask you what type of fork you prefer.
The oceanside decks are incredible and serene. There is always an attendant nearby to help you with whatever you require. Snorkeling is also quite decent, as the visibility is outstanding.
Despite being a fully booked hotel, it has never felt crowded. Lounge chairs are plentiful even in the "choice" locations.
The concierge was incredibly helpful in answering our many questions. They had an educated answer for everything and were always available when we needed them. Every one we met went above and beyond in helping us. We even had a very odd conundrum where we purchased an antique (in Funchal) which we thought we could fit in our suitcase but couldn't, and they graciously offered to pack it up in bubble wrap for us.
Housekeeping was almost telepathically precise at picking the most opportune moments to make up and turn down our room. Speaking of turn down service, it sort of blew my mind. I didn't realize how nicely it could be done! So many little details including fresh slippers, bedside water, and a little padded mat by the bed felt like ultimate luxury.
I've never felt so pampered in my whole life and I hope dearly that I'm able to return someday!
