Most people have heard of Kimchi, but South Korea's gastronomic menu goes way this flavoursome dish of salt-fermented vegetables. Mouth-watering noodle dishes, hearty soups, sizzling meat dishes and scrumptious desserts are among the joys which await. Bibimbap is a hugely popular dish consisting of cooked rice topped with vegetables, pickled Chinese radish, carrots and mushrooms, with raw beef and egg yolk often added. Sundubu Jjigae is a spicy stew which features seafood and tofu served like bibimbap in a hot stone bowl. Kan Poong gi is spicy pieces of chicken which are double deep-fried and covered in a kan poong chilli oil-based sauce, while Miso Sobaegi is a much-loved vegetarian dish of steamed and fried aubergine, topped with shitake, oyster and enoki, oyster mushrooms.

Popular desserts in South Korea include Bungeoppang, a fish-shaped pancake with a sweet red bean filling and Bingsu, a refreshing portion of shaved ice which is topped with sweetened condensed milk, red beans, misugaru and watermelon. Rice wines are very popular in South Korea and Soju is a clear, low-alcohol, distilled spirit served in many restaurants and bars.

South Korea has a temperate climate with 4 distinct seasons. The spring months of April, May and June, and the autumn months of September, October and November are wonderful times to spend a cruise holiday in South Korea. These two seasons enjoy sunny and dry conditions, with pleasant average temperatures. Fluctuations in regional temperature differences in South Korea can be attributed to the country’s high-altitude interior and warmer, but windier, coastline. The country does experience the occasional typhoon in the summer months, but they are generally kept at bay by protection from China and Japan.
Average daily temperatures in spring area a pleasant 15 - 18°C, summer temperatures in July and August range between 23°C and 30°C, average autumn temperatures hover between 19-21°C and winter temperatures between December and March can plummet dramatically to as low as -20°C. July is usually the wettest month in South Korea, with a high risk of torrential downpours.
