Other exciting activities include swimming with dolphins, diving to enchanting shipwrecks teeming with marine life, kayaking in mangrove forests and hiking in wild and rugged mountain terrain. The islands are blessed with a myriad of romantic beach bars for sipping cocktails at sunset, excellent high-end shops and no shortage of night clubs and live music venues where you can really get in the party spirit.
The culinary delights on the islands are a mouth-watering blend of West Indian, Caribbean and British-inspired flavours. Seafood plays a key part in many recipes and the national dish is 'fish and fungi', a tasty favourite featuring okra and cornmeal which is made into a cake and served with braised fish prepared with onions, tomatoes and spices.
Callaloo is a much-loved stew made with leaves of the callaloo plant which are boiled with various meats, coconut milk, okra, seasonings, aubergine, onions, and potatoes. Rice and peas is an island staple which is the basis for many dishes, while Conch Creole is a scrumptious combination of conch, salt pork, garlic, spices, onions and hot peppers. Another superb fish dish is Porgies and Grunts which comprises yellowtail, kingfish, and bonito which is boiled in a lime-flavoured broth and served with a tasty Creole sauce, made with onions, tomatoes and peppers.
Local desserts include fresh key lime pie, coconut tart and upside down pineapple cake. A popular alcoholic drink on the islands is called Painkiller, which consists of coconut cream, pineapple and orange juice, plenty of rum and fresh nutmeg garnishing.
The British Virgin Islands have a tropical climate and all-year-round sunshine makes them a great choice for a wonderful cruise holiday in stunning natural surroundings. The peak season runs from December to April, with a daily average temperature of 25°C, an average of nine hours of daily sunshine and very little rainfall. May to November gets more rainfall, but it comes in short and heavy bursts, and conditions are still pleasantly hot and sunny, with the daily average around 28°C.
September and October are the wettest months in the islands and the driest months are February and March when rainfall is less than two inches per month. The sea is warm enough for swimming throughout the year, with temperatures around 26°C from January to April and around 29°C in September and October.
The British Virgin Islands are brimming with wonderful things to see and do, from enjoying the attractions in the main cities and towns to getting out and about to discover a plethora of natural delights. Anegada Island is a spellbinding place with flocks of flamingos and other creatures, plus incredible opportunities to snorkel and dive, with more than 300 wrecks to explore, while Sage Mountain National Park on Tortola Island is home to spectacular rainforest flora and fauna, and tropical birds. The Baths at Virgin Gorda is an enthralling attraction where you'll be amazed by a labyrinth of hidden grottoes and plunge pools, winding tunnels and gigantic boulders, while the Bubbly Pool is an incredible natural jacuzzi in Jost Van Dyke Island. Check out the trendy beach bars in Cane Garden Bay, immerse yourself in history and culture in the islands’ capital Road Town on Tortola or sail in a catamaran past the sea caves of Norman Island, thought to be the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel Treasure Island. Other islands which are bursting with fun-packed things to do are Norman Island, Cooper Island, Peter Island, Guana Island and Beef Island.
