There’s so much more to tantalise your taste buds in Denmark than delicious Danish bacon and delicious Danish cakes. Smørrebrød is a simple Danish classic comprising a slice of rye bread topped with various combinations of fillings such as roast beef, pickled herring, mayo and shrimps, smoked salmon and ricotta. Stegt flæsk is a much-loved dish featuring crispy pork with parsley sauce and potatoes, while a frikadeller is a savoury meatball served with potatoes, brown sauce and cabbage.
Fish dishes are very popular in Denmark with pickled herring a particular favourite - methods of presentation include curried, smoked, fried, dressed in mustard and breaded. You'll come across hot dog stands throughout the country where the traditional snack is made with local red sausage.
Rabarberkage is a scrumptious rhubarb and marzipan cake you’ll come across in Danish cafes and restaurants, while Risengrød is a delightful sweet rice pudding. Danish beer goes down a treat with many holidaymakers, liquorice tea is a much-loved hot drink and Gløgg is a festive favourite comprising mulled wine, cinnamon, cloves, slivered almonds and raisins.
TDenmark is a great place to visit all-year-round, depending on what you want to see and do. It has the least extreme climate of all the Scandinavian countries but its weather can change rapidly due to the close proximity to the sea.
An ideal time to visit during a cruise is from July and August when the daylight hours are long and temperatures are between 15°C and 20°C. Conditions are perfect at this time of year for getting out and about to discover the delights of this wonderful country. Autumn is a pleasant time in Denmark but temperatures start falling considerably by November, down to around 8°C. The winter months of December to February are snowy, cold and windy when temperatures average just above freezing. The country gets an average of 61cms of rainfall annually.
