There’s never a dull moment in sunny Malta, a magnificent island in the central Mediterranean between Sicily and the North African coast. Malta has plenty of appeal as a port of call for couples, families and groups of friends enjoying a fabulous cruise on the ocean waves. The local delicacies and delicious traditional dishes in Malta are more than capable of satisfying the most discerning palate. From scrumptious seafood and meat dishes to flavoursome desserts, you won't struggle to find something to tantalise your taste buds.
Stuffat tal-Fenek is a much-loved Maltese stew which consists of tender cuts of rabbit which are slow-cooked in a pot with red wine, carrots, onions, potatoes, garlic and tomato puree. A fast-food favourite is pastizzi which comprises layers of flaky pastry with a choice of fillings including corned beef, ricotta cheese, anchovy, apple and mushy peas. Other popular culinary delights in Malta include Lampuki fish pie, Bragioli (beef olives) and Kapunata, a Maltese version of ratatouille featuring fresh tomatoes, green peppers, capers, olives and aubergines.
Kannoli is a wonderful dessert which consists of pastry filled with ricotta, dark chocolate and nuts and another tasty treat is prinjolata, a round cake covered with melted chocolate, cream and cherries. Cisk lager is a refreshing drink which has been brewed on the island since 1929, while Bajtra is a very pleasant liqueur made from prickly pear.
Malta rarely experiences extremes of temperature, meaning it generally has very pleasant and comfortable conditions, without the risk of you ever becoming really cold or baking hot. The island's mild winters and warm summers make it an appealing destination all year round. Malta enjoys more than 3,000 hours of annual sunshine, so it's a great place for getting out and discovering a myriad of wonderful attractions
This charming Mediterranean haven of fun and excitement enjoys an average 12 hours of sunshine in the summer period and an appealing 5 to 6 hours in the mid-winter. Temperatures in the summer season, between May and September, peak at around 32°C during July and August. Average daily temperatures in the winter season, between December and February, are around 15°C to 20°C, making the island a great choice for a winter holiday. Most of Malta’s rainfall occurs in the wintertime, with little falling in the spring and summer periods.
Malta doesn’t disappoint when it comes to wonderful attractions and fun-packed outdoor sports and leisure activities. The alluring island capital of Valletta is an awe-inspiring place which boasts enthralling ancient architecture, regal squares, grand palaces, an amazing grand harbour and magnificent churches. Compelling key attractions include St John’s Co-Cathedral, the domed Carmelite Church, Parliament Building, Grandmaster’s Palace, Royal Opera House and the National Museum of Archaeology. Elsewhere in Malta you’ll be wowed by the Hagar Qim and Mnajdra neolithic temples complex, the Medieval fortified city of Mdina and the Tarxien Temples on the south of the island.
Popular activities in Malta include jeep safari tours, quad biking in the coast, scuba diving on the island’s many shipwrecks, ziplining in Rabat and canyoning in the Malta Valley. Day trips to the Maltese islands of Comino and Gozo are also highly recommended. The island’s superb beaches are also great for soaking up the sun or taking to the Mediterranean for some thrilling water sports action.
