The availability of superb fresh fish means seafood figures prominently on many island menus. Blue marlin, red snapper, wahoo and sea pike are among the types of fish which are prepared in a variety of ways including boiling, grilling, baking, salting and frying. Gambas al ajillo is a popular choice in many eating places and features large prawns cooked in olive oil, chilli, brandy and garlic, while Puchero is a classic stew made with various cuts of meat, carrots, onions, potatoes, chickpeas and lentils. Conejo Campesino is a rabbit dish which is fried at a very high heat, with plenty of garlic.
Scrumptious desserts on the island include torrijas, which are sweet maize flour fritters with honey and cinnamon, and frangollo, a corn-based milk pudding flavoured with honey, cinnamon and brandy. Popular drinks in Lanzarote include Tropical and Dorada beers, Ron Miel (honey rum) and top-quality wines from the La Geria region.
Lanzarote is the closest of the Canary Islands to the west coast of Africa and enjoys the hottest weather. The island's hottest and busiest month is August, which enjoys an average daily maximum of 31°C. The driest month is July when there is normally no rainfall and the wettest month is December with an average rainfall of 29mm. It’s important to wear plenty of high factor sun tan lotion as the island’s sea breezes can mask the intensity of the sun. The average sea water temperature in summer is 22°C, falling to around 18°C in the winter months.
