You won’t struggle to find delicious food in Puerto Rico - from the much-loved national dish Arroz Con Gandules to scrumptious indulgent desserts, the island’s cuisine is easily capable of delighting your taste buds. You’ll discover mouth-watering snacks in lively street food stalls and fabulous fine dining fare in a myriad of gourmet restaurants.
Arroz Con Gandules is a superb rice dish, made with pork, olives and red peppers which are tossed in a sensational sofrito sauce. Mofongo is an island staple to accompany pork or chicken which features chicharrones (fried pork skin), mashed fried plantains and plenty of garlic. Quesitos consist of flaky pastry which is usually stuffed with cheese and presented in many flavours including guava, salted caramel and dulce de leche.
Puerto Rico's official drink since 1978 is Piña Colada, which consists of coconut cream, pineapple juice, white rum, plus pineapple wedges, cherries and whipped cream for toppings. It is served in bars, restaurants and roadside kiosks across the island.
Puerto Rico has a sub-tropical climate and enjoys a very pleasant climate with warm, sunny and humid days throughout most of the year, temperatures rarely falling below 18°C. The summer runs from May to October and August is the hottest month, with an average daily maximum of 29°C and an average low of 23°C.
The island's coldest month is January, with an average high of 28 °C and an average low of 21 °C. There is minimal rainfall in the summer months, with an average of 9mm of rain each month. February is the wettest month with around 22mm. Sea temperatures are great for swimming most of the year, with an average temperature of 23°C during summer and early autumn.

The Mosquito Bioluminescent Bay on Vieques is definitely worth visiting. This is one of only five locations in the world where you can witness the amazing phenomenon where millions of single-celled micro-organisms called dinoflagellates light up the bay at night, creating a magical luminescent blue-green glow.
Other must-see attractions on the island include the Castillo San Felipe del Morro fortress which dates back to 1539, the Ponce Museum of Art, The Arecibo Observatory, Cabo Rojo Lighthouse, Caguana Indigenous Center and Toro Verde Zip Line.
