St Kitts and Nevis may be the smallest and least populated country in the western hemisphere but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in vibrancy, beauty and amazing attractions. This awe-inspiring sunshine cruise destination is brimming with rich history and culture, natural wonders and amazing hospitality.
St Kitts, the larger of the two islands, is home to verdant rolling hills, turquoise waters, powdery sands, tropical rainforests and old mills and colonial plantation houses. Hiking the Mount Liamuiga volcano, hopping on one of the island's working double-decker trains and whizzing through the ‘Valley of the Giants’ at 50mph on a thrilling ziplining adventure are just a few of the great things to do in St Kitts. Basseterre, the delightful island capital, really has the wow factor with its French colonial architecture and a host of attractions including Independence Square, Berkeley Memorial, Brimstone Hill Fortress and the National Museum of St Kitts.
The island has a myriad of superb places to eat, ranging from trendy beachfront bistros to posh plantation dining rooms and if you fancy some retail therapy you’ll find dozens of stores selling jewellery, diamonds and gemstones in at Porte Zante, while Pelican Shopping Mall is the place to get your holiday souvenirs. You’ll also discover pulsating nightlife in The Strip along Frigate Bay with its lively Reggae beach bars and open-air dance floors where you can party under the stars.
There's plenty of scrumptious traditional cuisine in St Kitts to tantalise your taste buds, with some wonderful dishes that are easily capable of satisfying the most discerning palate. The island's most well-known dish is goat water stew, a thin soup which comprises goat meat, breadfruit, papaya, onions, clove and a range of herbs and spices.
Rikkita beef is beefsteak marinated in Champagne and hot peppers before frying, while Pelau is a wonderful combination of chicken, pig tail, saltfish and vegetables, served with rice and pigeon peas. Conkies are tasty delights comprising cornmeal mixed with pumpkin, grated sweet potato and coconut. A much-loved local dessert is coconut rum bread pudding and Tourment d’amour is a multi-layered pastry featuring coconut jam, vanilla and genoise.
The national drink in St Kitts is Cane Spirits Rothschild (CSR) which is distilled from fresh sugar cane and another popular local drink is rum, which is prepared in many tempting flavours including vanilla, mango and coffee.
All-year-round Caribbean sunshine makes St Kitts a great place for a cruise holiday any time that appeals to you. Average temperatures range around the mid to high 20s, with the mercury rising into the 30s on particularly hot days. The warmest time of year is usually the middle of August where highs are regularly around 31.5°C, with temperatures only occasionally dropping below 26°C at night.
The island’s high season is from mid-December to April and the hot and tropical climate is tempered by pleasant trade winds for most of the year. The island experiences some rain showers between May and October. July to November is the hurricane season when many of the restaurants, shops and attractions are open for fewer hours and some hotels close down for a few months.
St Kitts really hits the bullseye when it comes to exciting things to see and do during your visit. The Wingfield Estate, a restoration of an old sugar refinery, provides a captivating insight into the island’s history and Fairview Great House is the place to sample some of St Kitts’ finest rum. Other key attractions include the bustling capital of Basseterre, St Kitts Scenic Railway, Romney Manor and Caribelle Batik, Mount Liamuiga, Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park and Independence Square where slave auctions were held in the 1700s. Swimming with dolphins, catamaran excursions, turtle and bird watching, dune buggy safaris and jungle trekking are among the popular activities you can enjoy. Other fun-packed pursuits on the island include horseriding, golf, kayaking, paddleboarding, parasailing, hiking, diving, cycling, jetskiing, sea excursions and canyoning.
The annual carnival, which starts at the end of November and runs for six weeks, is the largest national event in St Kitts and Nevis. It's a colourful celebration showcasing local Caribbean culture and African heritage. The world famous St. Kitts Music Festival takes place at the end of June. The island has many glorious sandy expanses including Majors Bay Beach, Cockleshell Beach, North Frigate Bay Beach and Sandbank Bay. For some party action after dark you should head for The Strip in Frigate Bay, a hive of activity, where the wonderful venues include The Monkey Bar with its open-air dance floor and Mr. X's Shiggidy Shack where the entertainment includes live bands, karaokes and fire-eating shows.
