Beach Days

Anyone looking to follow the in-crowd to Abu Dhabi’s stylish beach clubs this summer better be prepared to pay a premium for the privilege. However, if you’re not interested in splashing out, a visit to Corniche Beach promises swimming, snorkelling, sandcastle building and lazing in the sun, and best of all, doesn’t have to cost a thing. You’ll find glistening turquoise waters, pristine white sands, a seaside boardwalk, gardens, and nearby cafes and restaurants. The 2km Blue Flag beach is divided into three sections, one of which is completely free. The two others are ideal for families and children, with a fence providing privacy and one featuring a quiet zone. Entrance is AED 10 for adults and AED 5 for children, with under fives free. As well as having a lifeguard on patrol until sunset, Corniche Beach offers showers and changing rooms, and you can hire loungers and umbrellas.

Outdoor Activities

If you’re someone who doesn’t like to sit still during your summer holiday, or you’re seeking family-friendly adventures to please all, you’ll probably find many activities come with a hefty price tag. Well, you’ll be happy to know that in Abu Dhabi, you can enjoy a variety of outdoor pursuits without paying a penny. One spot where you can get active for free is The Corniche. You can take advantage of access to volleyball courts, football pitches, cycle paths and playing fields, while there’s a children’s play area nearby for little ones. Those who prefer adventures in nature should head for Green Mubazzarah Park, in Al Ain. A wonderful spot for picnics, this beautiful natural haven is also home to a hot spring and you’re welcome to enjoy an invigorating dip free of charge. Other options include hiking up the emirate’s highest peak, Jebel Hafit, or a leisurely day exploring Mangrove National Park.

Hit The Shops

Abu Dhabi is the place to be for anyone who puts shopping at the very top of their list of hobbies. Well, that is unless you’re looking for things to do that won’t cost a thing. Of course, you could just stick to window shopping. If you can resist temptation, you’ll be spoilt for choice by the vast retail emporiums to explore. Yas Mall, Abu Dhabi Mall, Al Ain Mall, Marina Mall and The Galleria Al Maryah Island are among the many enticing shopping destinations to choose from, offering a multitude of global brands alongside high-end stores, specialist boutiques and designer names. You’ll also find entertainment venues, such as cinemas, children’s play areas and games zones, as well as a spectrum of dining destinations where you’ll discover an array of cheap eats. For a more authentic shopping experience, head to one of Abu Dhabi’s bustling souks to browse traditional wares, handicrafts and souvenirs. Remember though, you can look but don’t touch.

Step Back In Time

If you’re fascinated by history, you’ll love Abu Dhabi, with an assortment of free attractions that shed light on the emirate’s beguiling past. One such place is Al Jahili Fort, in Al Ain, which was built in the 1890s by Zayed The First and is one of the largest forts in the United Arab Emirates. Once home to the ruling Al Nahyan family and a military outpost, the landmark is now a cultural centre and exhibition space, which is free to enter. For a truly immersive history lesson, a visit to Abu Dhabi’s Heritage Village is a must. Here you can learn about traditional Emirati life in the desert, explore a replica old-world souq and mosque, and watch craftsmen use time-honoured skills to make fabric, glass ware and pottery. Other sites of historic interest that are free to explore include the 5,000 year Jabel Hafit Tombs, The Founder’s Memorial and the Wahat Al Karama memorial.

Cultural Wonders

While a visit to Louvre Abu Dhabi is a must for any art lovers holidaying in Abu Dhabi this summer, entry will cost you. Luckily you don’t have to let budgeting for this experience stop you indulging in your obsession on other days. A host of free art events and activities can be enjoyed at Manarat Al Saadiyat, a welcoming community space located on Saadiyat Island. Another option for enrichment is a visit to Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Sitting amidst immaculate gardens, it is one of the biggest mosques in the world, and features awe-inspiring mosaic artwork, more than 1,000 columns embedded with gemstones, seven spectacular chandeliers and the world’s largest hand-made carpet. The Mosque is free to visit, with guided tours also available without charge. The main hall is closed to visitors on Fridays, 12 noon to 3pm, for prayers. If you are thinking of visiting, make sure to dress respectfully.
