Be inspired to take flight for an enchanting escape in Saint Lucia

Sitting amidst the glistening waters of the Caribbean, the island of Saint Lucia has long been a favourite of couples, families and honeymooners seeking sun-kissed shores and paradise surroundings.

Nicknamed the ‘Helen of the West Indies’, in comparison to Helen of Troy, who in Greek Mythology was the most beautiful woman in the world, this dream destination is an ideal choice for both relaxation and adventure.

With postcard perfection around every corner, a visit to Saint Lucia is a must.

However, if you’ve not yet experienced this captivating tropical island, here are a few fabulous reasons why you should choose Saint Lucia for your next luxury sunshine escape.

StLucia

Captivating natural scenery

It may be one of the smaller Caribbean islands, but none can boast a backdrop like Saint Lucia has with the Piton Mountains.

A UNESCO World Heritage site, these two volcanic peaks are said to be the most photographed location in the whole of the Caribbean, and it’s not hard to see why.

Named little and large, Gros Piton stands at 771 metres high, while Petit Piton is slightly smaller at 743 metres.

With crystal clear waters in front and blue skies behind, if you visit one sight in the Caribbean, make it the Pitons.

Stunning beaches

You’ll find plenty of opportunities to feel the sand between your toes during your time in St Lucia, with some great beaches dotted all around the island.

Locals and visitors tend to opt for Reduit Beach, with everything you could possibly need for a day of sunbathing, from busy beach bars to a wealth of water sports.

If you’re seeking a stretch of sand that offers breathtaking views of the Pitons, then Jalousie Beach is for you. An enchanting spot, it’s also the perfect choice for relaxation.

One beach popular with movie buffs is Marigot Bay, which may be familiar to many as a film location from the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise.

StLucia

Fantastic food and drink

Saint Lucia may be small in size but it offers huge Caribbean flavours to tantalise visitor’s taste buds.

Counting green figs and salt fish as its national dish, you may be a bit confused when it comes to your table, as the ‘figs’ are actually green unripe bananas which have been boiled along with flaked cod, onions, peppers, herbs and spices. The results, however, are simply scrumptious.

You can also enjoy fresh lobster, served in a variety of ways, such as steamed lobster tails, lobster ceviche and spiny lobster sushi. Other fish dishes are also popular, such as Saint Lucia lambi, shellfish fritters in a spicy Caribbean sauce or Accra, salted cod fritters.

As the island’s largest export, it’s no surprise that bananas figure massively in St Lucia’s dessert choices. The most indulgent being a Banana Sponge Cake, with pineapple, orange juice and walnuts.

The Caribbean also loves its rum, and Saint Lucia is no exception.

The most popular brand is the multiple award-winning Chairman’s Reserve. Whether you drink it neat, as a mixer or as part of a cocktail, you’ll enjoy a real taste sensation.

StLucia

Laid-back lifestyle

If it’s a holiday of pure relaxation you’re after, then Saint Lucia is for you.

Whether its kicking back on the beach, taking a boat tour or simply sitting at a bar, the casual way of life is evident everywhere you go.

If you like to keep active fear not though, as a wide range of activities are also on offer, meaning you can enjoy the island at whatever pace you feel like.

From zip-lining to Segway tours and cocoa plantation visits to chocolate making, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Visitors to the island can also experience a range of water sports, including diving, snorkelling, sailing and paddle-boarding.

Saint Lucians also enjoy a good celebration, with the Soleil Summer Festival - comprising of six sensational events - being a particular highlight.

Saint Lucia Jazz kicks off proceedings in May, with concerts and educational activities taking place across the island. Then, in June/July, it’s Carnival time, with a spectrum of colour, tantalising cuisine, endless energy and non-stop partying.

This is followed, in August, by Mercury Fest, a huge beach party attracting thousands. After this, it’s time to slow things down a little with the Saint Lucia Roots and Soul Festival, which takes place in the same month.

A feast for the taste buds is on the menu in September, with Saint Lucia Food and Rum taking place. The Soleil Summer Festival then comes to a colourful end in October, with the Saint Lucia Arts and Heritage event celebrating the island’s fascinating culture through music, performances, exhibitions and street parties.

With so many options for leisure, pleasure and relaxation, Saint Lucia really is the holiday destination of your dreams.
