The famous Fontein Cave is also located here, preserving paintings and carvings from the Caquetios Indians. Conquer the Hooiberg Hill, which was formed by ancient volcanoes, for a spectacular view.
Discover the rich history of Aruba and its culture with a trip to the Fort Zoutman Historical Museum. Conveniently housed in the oldest building in the capital, Oranjestad, the fort was originally built in 1796 in honour of Danish Admiral Johan Zuotman. The museum showcases typical Aruban life throughout history as well as a collection of significant documents. Tour the Bushiribana gold mill ruins to understand Aruba’s history and success in the 19th-Century gold rush. Interestingly, Aruba roughly translates to “there was gold”. For an insight into the strong Catholic faith the country possesses, visit the Lourdes Grotto, a shrine of the Virgin Mary built into rocks, or one of the many stunning churches.
Enjoy an authentic Aruban culinary experience by indulging in traditional food at one of the many eateries around the island. Taste local delicacies like the national dish, Kenshi Yena, which is cheese stuffed with chicken, tomatoes and olives. Wash it down with Balashi beer brewed on the island or the local cocktail Aruba Ariba.
Aruba promises more sunny days than any other Caribbean island. Explore the lush landscapes and dazzling waters under constant sunshine with an average temperature of 32?. The country experiences minimal rainfall as it does not have a wet season. Visitors are assured that any showers will be short-lived as only 20 inches of precipitation falls annually. Aruba is located on the edge of the hurricane belt, meaning that it is a low risk destination for tropical storms. A cool breeze can often be felt, providing respite from the heat. Peak time to visit the island is December-April when Aruba truly comes to life.
You love captivating scenery on warm, tropical islands. Like most of the Caribbean, you’ll be guaranteed immaculate white sand beaches and crystal-clear water to splash around in. Welcoming locals and a colourful culture awaits you on this enchanting island, where the sunshine is unmatched and the atmosphere is electric. What else do you need?
Aruba is a beach holiday paradise with a myriad of immaculate stretches of sand sure to take your breath away. Eagle Beach was voted as the number one in the Caribbean and third best in the world in 2023 on TripAdvisor. Walk along the soft sand, take spectacular snaps of the Fofoti trees only found on this beach and look out for the four different species of turtle that nest here.
The bustling district of Palm Beach offers up-market shops, bars and restaurants as well as the most popular beach in Aruba all on your hotel’s doorstep. With three kilometres of sand and sea to explore, you’ll find endless fun.
Situated in the south, outside of the “sunrise city”, San Nicolas, is Baby Beach. A perfect spot for families, everyone can enjoy the shallow waters in the calm lagoon. With crystal-clear sea, this is a great place for snorkelling and spotting the myriad of marine life.
Malmok Beach is the serene area on the road leading to the California Lighthouse, sand dunes and the Tierra del Sol 18-hole golf course. A world of discovery is waiting under the waves, where scuba divers can investigate sunken shipwrecks.
A cosy cove can be found on Andicuri Beach. Favoured by locals, as it’s further away from the main tourist areas, you’ll discover complete bliss here. While there are no amenities, it is the perfect place for a picnic with your family. Walk a little further and find the black stone beach and the naturally occuring triple-arch limestone bridge.
Every Tuesday evening in the Fort Zoutman Historical Museum is the Bon Bini Festival. A smaller version of Carnival, you are invited to this folkloric celebration of Aruban culture. Experience traditional dancing, costumes, music and learn a little of the local language.
Carnival is the month-long celebration to usher in Lent that unites the entire island. Calypso music vibrates through the streets as parades with floats and glittery costumes bring Aruba to life. Other incredible sights include the pageants and street parties.
Flag and Anthem Day is celebrated annually on the 18th March. In 1986, the Netherlands accepted Aruba’s right to have autonomous status within their Kingdom and has since regarded this as their independence day. Cultural events throughout the island commemorate the nation’s journey throughout history.
For immersion into Aruba’s faith, you can join a procession from St Teresita Church in San Nicolas to the Lourdes Grotto for a special mass in front of the shrine to the Virgin Mary. Plan your trip around the 11th February to be involved.
