Dubai is a city known for both its water and theme parks, yet there is a little known activity in Dubai that can give you the same kind of physical thrill without all the tracks and slides.
This is a way to experience all of the adrenaline without the corporate atmosphere that can put some people off. This activity is of course the Desert Safari.
The Desert Safari involves being driven around the sand dunes of Dubai in a 4x4 at high speeds. This is known as “Dune Bashing.” Although this may sound dangerous, it is important to remember that all of the drivers are experienced professionals who do this every day and have extensive first aid training. All of the 4x4’s are equipped with roll cages to protect the cars and passenger if anything goes wrong.
Dune Bashing is the main draw to a Desert Safari but there are other activities included in the tour to really make the most of your time in the desert. Although the word ‘safari’ often conjures up images of looking at wildlife on the Savannah and the word ‘desert’ gives off almost the exact opposite image, there are actually animals on the Desert Safari, namely camels.
There is a camel ride section on the tour, where visitors are given the opportunity to ride a camel through the desert, the main way people would travel through the desert before Dune Bashing was made possible by 4x4s.
After the dune bashing has finished the tour will take you back to a private desert camp where you will be made to feel at home. There is a complimentary BBQ dinner as well shisha pipes and entertainment in the form of henna painting and a belly dancer. For an extra fee a bar can be provided. Guests will either be taken back to their hotel from the camp or there is an option for an overnight tour where they will spend the night at the camp and go back to the hotel after a complimentary breakfast.
There are a number of optional extras that can be paid for whilst on the tour. These are sand skiing and quad biking. Sand skiing is very similar to regular skiing, yet it involved going down sand dunes instead of snow. The fine, powdery sand of the Dubai desert acts very similar to snow, making the experience feel very similar to regular skiing. The quad biking is similar to the dune bashing, taking place on smaller dunes so as to lower the risk presented to the individual rider.
