Morocco

Mystical medinas

No trip to Morocco would be complete without a visit to its enthralling medinas. These endearing city old towns or historical centres are teeming with tradition and culture. Gaze in awe at beautiful mosques, ancient gateways, old fortified kasbahs, spectacular palaces and ancient Koranic schools. Stroll down winding streets, tuck into delicious street food or snap up a bargain in a colourful street market. Casablanca, Essaouira, Rabat, Meknes, Tetouan, Fez, Taza and Tangier all have their own beguiling medinas. However, the one in the walled city of Marrakech warrants particular note, with its elegant riads, Saadian tombs and Jemaa el Fna, a truly awe-inspiring square which bursts into life after dark, with dancers, musicians, snake-charmers and a multitude of street vendors. No fewer than seven of Morocco’s medinas have attained the coveted UNESCO World Heritage Site status.

Souk, Morocco

Spellbinding souks

The famous souks in Morocco are striking kaleidoscopes of sound, smell and unimaginable colour. These traditional open-air markets, which travelling merchants and traders have passed through for centuries, will leave every holidaymaker awestruck by their infectious vibrancy. You’ll be surrounded by a plethora of stalls selling everything under the sun, with pottery, aromatic spices, jewellery, clothes, lanterns, toys, souvenirs, leatherware and traditional Moroccan rugs among the merchandise available. Haggling for a deal is all part of the fun at these lively shopping hubs, so prepare for some friendly resistance when you put your bartering skills to the test. It's easy to get lost in a souk’s complex maze of narrow alleyways, which makes opting for a licensed guide a wise move if you want to make it back to your hotel before midnight!

Beach, Morocco

Blissful beaches

Morocco ticks all the boxes for an unforgettable beach holiday experience, with an amazing 2,150 miles of shoreline featuring phenomenal pristine sands. Agadir is a hugely popular resort on the dramatic Atlantic coast which really has the wow factor. Boasting an outstanding 10km crescent-shaped beach it is perfect for water sports fanatics. It’s also a great choice for families, with safe and shallow waters for children and the opportunity for traditional sandcastle-building sessions. Charming Casablanca is perfect for romantic couples who want to stroll along the golden sands and sip cocktails in a relaxing bar, while Essaouira, Tangier and Asilah will also impress you with their fabulous beaches. You really are spoilt for choice when it comes to sandy expanses, but those of note include Dalia Beach, Monica Beach, Taghazout Beach, Mehdia Beach, Sidi Kaouki and Martil Beach.

Mountains, Morocco

Majestic mountains

Morocco is a hiker's paradise and its wondrous mountain ranges are guaranteed to have every adventurer feeling on top of the world. The major locations where hardcore trekkers can give their walking boots a work out are the Rif Mountains in the north and the Atlas Mountains stretching through the middle of the country. Another option for traversing Morocco's vast highland areas is an exhilarating overland expedition in a powerful 4X4 where you'll be wowed by breathtaking flora and fauna, cascading waterfalls and deep gorges. Rock climbing, mountain biking, orienteering and caving are other popular pursuits in Morocco’s lofty expanses. Mount Toubkal in the Atlas Mountains is the highest peak in Morocco and North Africa, towering at an impressive 4,167 metres and capped by glistening snow in the winter.

Desert, Morocco

Enchanting deserts

Escape the hustle and bustle with a sojourn into the beguiling desert wildernesses of the Moroccan Sahara. Here you’ll be spellbound by endless shifting sands, rolling dunes and remarkable untouched beauty. Spend a romantic night under the stars with the love of your life in a traditional Bedouin camp, take to the skies on a hot air balloon ride or join a camel trek across giant dunes and through dreamy oases. Other popular desert activities include dune-bashing buggy safaris, quad biking and daredevil sandboarding sessions. At the end of the day, when the heat subsides, the desert is bathed in a whole new magnificence, with sunsets that are out of this world and colourful spectacles, like the pink hues of the dunes at Merzouga. Morocco’s two main areas of sandy windblown desert are Erg Chigaga and Erg Chebbi.

BestTimeToVisit

Morocco is a dream come true for sun lovers, with a wonderful sub-tropical climate which equates to hot summers, very mild winters and year-round sunshine. April and May are lovely months to visit, when the country is lush and verdant, with a pleasant nationwide average temperature hovering around 25°C. September to October are similarly appealing, at an average of 21°C. July and August are real scorchers, with the mercury soaring to 40°C in Marrakesh and baking hot conditions in the desert, so this is a great time to holiday beside the Atlantic coast beaches which are cooled by welcome sea breezes. Morocco is also an excellent choice if you need a break from the gloomy and chilly winter weather in the UK. The average winter daytime temperature range is an agreeable 8°C to 17°C, with plenty of invigorating sunshine. This is an ideal time for getting out and about to explore this fascinating land and its imperial cities, while avoiding the peak season crowds into the bargain.
