When visiting a luxury destination such as Bangkok, you might find yourself with a lot of things to do in a very short space of time. As much as pre-planning and research will help, it’s often a good idea to get some recommendations on how you can make the most of your time in the Thai capital.
Rather than trawling through review sites that can be a bit hit-or-miss, we’ve put together our top ten must-see attractions in Bangkok. If you can see all ten during your holiday, you’ll have seen just some of the wonderful sights this spectacular city has to offer.

Also known as Wat Phra Prakaew or the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, this beautifully preserved landmark is the definition of a tourist hotspot, given it is comprised of over 200 buildings inside one giant compound.
While many buildings are still off-limits to visitors, tourists can hire a guide at the ticket kiosk to show them round the impressive palace and discover over 200 years of history along the way.

The Temple of Dawn, as it’s more commonly known, is a stunning landmark that is instantly recognisable due to its tall spire which towers over the neighbouring area at 70 metres high. Built by King Taksin in 1768, this place of worship is still used for exactly that to this day. Visit the ordination hall, or climb the central prang for some incredible views of the Chao Phraya River.
The Chao Phraya River winds its way from north to south through the centre of Bangkok and has more than 50,000 people still using the waterways for transportation. Tourists normally end up travelling on the river in a water taxi, or exploring the city on a river cruise.
Known locally as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha (due to the giant, 46-metre long statue), Wat Pho is a superb complex for tourists to visit in conjunction with The Grand Palace, which is just a short stroll away. As well as exploring the temple, this attraction is also well-known for traditional Thai massages, which should be just the thing to relax a weary tourist.
Marketplaces in Bangkok put others around the world to shame, especially those that are the size of Chatuchak Market, which is over 35 acres and boasts more than 8,000 market stalls. Tourists can spend hours at this weekend market, trawling through bargains. There is also a handy system to help tourists navigate the huge area.
To outsiders this might seem like a very average name for a landmark, but Jim Thompson was actually responsible for reviving the whole Thai silk industry, inspiring fashion lines for decades to come all over the world. He was also interested in architecture and design, which is on show at his once well-preserved home, now turned museum. Tourists flock to this attraction to take in the ‘east-meets-west’ design elements, as well as the stunning art and antiques to be found inside.

You can easily spend a day or more exploring Chinatown in Bangkok, which is famous for its street food, market stalls, gold shops and temples. Try heading down Sampeng Lane for market stalls, Yaowarat Road for street food and Wat Mangkol Kamalawat temple for some superb Buddhist and Taoist shrines.

Along with being a fantastic green area in the middle of Bangkok’s urban sprawl, Lumpini Park is also a great place for locals to exercise and get some fresh air. Watch the water monitor lizards lazily rest by the lake, listen to a local orchestra or cycle round the park at your leisure.
With Thai boxing being one of the most popular sports in Thailand, it’s likely you might find yourself in close proximity to many matches. For the biggest match-ups, try Rajadamnern Stadium, Lumpinee Stadium or even Channel 7 Stadium. All of these venues offer a thrilling atmosphere due to Thai boxing’s popularity among local spectators.

Lastly, why not visit Thailand’s very first zoo, right in the centre of Bangkok? You will find a huge range of animals housed at the zoo including giraffes, elephants, reptiles, penguins and kangaroos. Visitors can also hire a pedalo on the massive lake, or discover some tasty morsels at the Food Centre.
