Oman Coast

Best Time For A Beach Holiday

Oman is the perfect spot for a beach holiday, with its crowning jewel being the Ras al Jinz turtle reserve in Sur. Enjoy crystal-clear waters in the day, before at night witnessing the miracle of turtles laying their eggs. While nesting season is usually May to September, peaking in July, the green turtles can be seen all year round. To witness a unique natural blowhole, Al Mughsail Beach in Salalah is the spot. Here you’ll get to experience the rare occurrence of seawater being pushed through the rocks, spraying up to 30 metres high. The Marneef Cave also creates the opportunity for unrivalled sights, with a stalactite pool tucked away inside. While the turtles do lay in summer, it is important to note that temperatures can reach 40°C. Take extra care if visiting in these months, or choose a beach holiday during the spring or winter, when the weather is much more comfortable.

Oman Hiking

Best Time For Outdoor Activities

Immerse yourself in a multitude of activities across Oman. Get lost in nature by hiking through the mountains. The balcony walk over Jebel Shams, the ‘Grand Canyon’ of Oman, is a firm favourite among visitors. Ride across the Arabian Desert in a 4X4 jeep or dune buggy. You’ll find a thrill by sandboarding down the monstrous dunes, reaching up to 300 metres high. Seek solitude in the Empty Quarter, Bedouin style. Take a dip in the captivating Wadi Bani Khalid, Oman’s famous desert oasis surrounded by palm trees. Always remember to bring sun protection and water on your excursions as being in the open desert or hiking in the mountains will be affected by the weather. Opt for a holiday outside of the summer months in order to enjoy these activities safely. Alternatively, heading out early before the sun is at its hottest will also create a pleasant experience.

Oman Rays

Best Time For Water Sports

With the exceptional turquoise waters of the Gulf of Oman, this wondrous destination is a hotspot for aquatic escapades. Get active by kitesurfing off the tranquil Masirah Island or kayaking along the fjords of Musandam. Dive in to investigate the coral gardens of Al Fahal Island, also known as “Shark Island”, and swim alongside marine life, such as barracudas, rays, octopi and blacktip reef sharks. Join a guided boat tour off mainland Oman in search of dolphins and whales. With many frequenting the tropical Arabian waters, you’re sure to make memories for a lifetime. While most sea creatures are present all year-round, July to November is the best time for spotting whale sharks as the water is at its warmest. The Daymaniyat Islands, another nature haven, is closed to the public from May to October in order to prioritise the care of the animals, but can still be seen from a boat.

Oman Mosque

Best Time For Exploring Muscat

Muscat is the historical capital city of Oman, rich in Arabic culture. Beautifully framed by the Al Hajar Mountains, this tucked away treasure is a great place to visit on your once-in-a-lifetime getaway. Admire the breathtaking skyline from a romantic sunset boat ride along Muscat’s coast. Be in awe of the magnificent Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, built to highlight the power of diversity by mixing traditional aspects from all Islamic denominations. Discover the history of Muscat through the Al Jalali and Al Mirani forts, both of which were built during the 16th-Century Portuguese occupation to fend off Ottoman invasions. The city can become quite hot during the summer months, with many of the locals finding refuge in the cooler mountains. Spring and Autumn are particularly good seasons to visit during, as this is when harvests of peaches, figs, olives and walnuts respectively are on offer at the markets.

Oman Food

Best Time For Festivals

There are many exciting festivals across Oman. If you’re looking to experience Omani culture, one of these should be on your bucket list. National Day on the 18th November is a patriotic festival celebrating the birthday of Sultan Qaboos bin Said, the father of modern Oman. For one month beginning in January is Muscat Festival, honouring culture and heritage with firework displays, traditional food and theatrical displays of music and acrobatics. Oman hosts a series of religious celebrations too, such as the Isra and Mi’raj Festival, which devotes daytime to praying and nighttime to celebrating the ascension of Muhammed. Visiting during the holy month of Ramadan is also a great way to immerse yourself in the country’s traditions, with feasting and festivities at the end of the day when fasting ends. It is important to note the times of year each festival falls at, and how this will impact your holiday.
