Johannesburg Highlights

Johannesburg is the provincial capital of South Africa's Gauteng Province and one of the 40 largest metropolitan areas in the world.

It is a young city which sprang up in 1886 when prospectors discovered gold in the area and has evolved into an awe-inspiring metropolis steeped in culture, heritage, leisure and entertainment.

Gaze out over the city from the observation deck of the 50th floor of the Carlton Centre, pay a visit to Nelson Mandela Square or set off on a guided walking tour which will take in vastly contrasting areas, from affluent leafy suburbs to Soweto shanty town.

Johannesburg Botanical Garden is a beautifully-maintained attraction, the Wilds Nature Reserve is a great place for a healthy walk and Maboneng Precinct in the east of the city is a cultural hub where you'll discover African art, traditional food, lively cafés and trendy boutiques.

Constitution Hill is a living museum which has previously been both a prison and a military fort and Satyagraha House is where Mahatma Gandhi resided for some of the time he lived in South Africa.

Gold Reef City is a spectacular entertainment centre which boasts theme park rides, live shows, a train station-themed cinema and fabulous dining venues.

Other major attractions include Mandela House in Soweto where the first president of South Africa lived prior to his imprisonment and Liliesleaf Farm which was the former meeting place of those leading the anti-apartheid freedom movement.

There’s plenty going on after dark in Johannesburg with a plethora of delightful bars, live music venues pulsating discos and clubs where you can dance the night away.

The city is also ideal for some retail therapy, with everything from traditional markets and corner shops to glitzy boutiques and massive high-end shopping malls.

Outside the city you can marvel at the lakes and waterfalls in the Modderfontein Reserve or visit the Dinokeng Game Reserve where you’ll be wowed by the wildlife Big Five of lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalos.
