Granvia Kyoto has always been my top choice when choosing a hotel in Kyoto. I’ve even recommended it to friends. Location is unrivalled with train station just below the hotel. Easy access to underground mall etc. However this hotel definitely calls for a major overhaul. Room carpets having white spots here and there. While I commend the hotel staff for acting swiftly after I told them I spotted a cockroach inside my bathroom, this is definitely a huge NO to choose this hotel ever again. Cleanliness is top priority especially when this room doesn’t come cheap.

We had an amazing stay at this hotel! It’s inside Kyoto station, which is a great way to get around all of the tourist attractions in Kyoto or beyond(Nara is 30 minutes away for example). The rooms were super clean and large which is somewhen unusual for Japan and the staff were incredibly friendly.
If you’re ever in Kyoto, I highly recommend staying here. It’s totally worth it!

Conveniently located directly inside the Kyoto Station, the JR station specifically, but very quiet despite the location. The room is spacious for Japanese standards but it's quite dated already. I didn't like the pajamas provided compared to the other hotels we stayed at. Breakfast is paid separately which we didn't try, Mister Donuts is just an escalator away. Service is excellent though, they went beyond to help us reserve an airport taxi for a very early morning flight.

Stayed here on a two night visit. Great location right at the station which is awesome but be prepared to pay for the privilege.
Beers at the cafe bar in the lobby are eye wateringly expensive!
The room we stayed in had thread bare carpet and a shower over the bath. Really?
Not to mention single beds. Apparently Japanese couples don’t sleep together after 10 years?
Breakfast was average to say the least.
Apart from the huge benefit of being right at the station if I were to come back to Kyoto again I’d be looking for something with a little more zing to it. This place is tired.

You choose the Granvia for its location. If you are staying in Kyoto and plan to do many day trips to Osaka, Nara, Hiroshima, etc., then the convenience of the Granvia’s location right in Kyoto station can’t be beat.
However, know that for the price you pay, there are many hotels that are more luxurious and comfortable. We paid 66,000 yen for a basic room. The bed was uncomfortable and the pillows were small and hard. Also, it is important to note that you can hear trains all night (you can even hear station announcements). Other hotels offer a much more comfortable stay, with more amenities, for a better price.
If you prioritize comfort, I recommend staying elsewhere.
