San Francisco is an incredible destination with a host of legendary attractions.
By far the most iconic is the Golden Gate Bridge. Opened 1937, this world-famous landmark is a must-see for every visitor. As well drive across, you can walk along the sidewalk of the 1.7-mile structure during daylight hours. Stunning views of the bridge can also be enjoyed from both north and south sides, with places to park available close to these spots.
Another San Francisco attraction that draws the crowds is Alcatraz. The former federal prison was once the home of a host of notorious criminals such as Al Capone and George ‘Machine Gun’ Kelly. Today, Alcatraz Island is a National Park and you can tour the cell house and hear tales of ex-prisoners and guards.
Sightseers and film buffs might also want to seek out Lombard Street. Labelled the crookedest street in the world due to the eight sharp turns along its 27 per cent grade slope, this famous stretch of road has appeared in a number of Hollywood blockbusters, including Magnum Force and Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp.
A great way to get around San Francisco, as well as enjoy a piece of history in its own right, is by taking a trip on a cable car. Named a national historic landmark in 1964, the vehicles are part of the last manually-operated cable car system in the world.
Visitors to San Francisco should also seek out Fisherman’s Wharf. The waterfront marketplace is a great spot to pick up a few souvenirs, while you can pay a visit to the sea lions basking in the sun on Pier 39, as well as enjoy the views of the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges, Alcatraz and Angel Island.

There are dining venues to suit all palates in this wonderful city, with everything from flavoursome comfort food to fine dining delights on offer.
You also won’t have to go very far when it’s time dine.
If you’re visiting Fisherman’s Wharf for the day, you will be spoilt for choice by the range of eateries on offer. Enjoy classic San Francisco seafood at Scoma’s or Alioto’s, sample splendid sourdough at Boudin at the Wharf, or enjoy tasty Italian fare at Cioppino’s or Pompei’s Grotto.
Other options for an Italian feast include Flour + Water, in Mission, or Molinari Delicatessen, North Beach.
For a taste of the Far East, head to Mister Jiu’s, in Chinatown, where you can enjoy mouth-watering Chinese dishes in stylish surroundings, while Mexican is on the menu at Mission Burrito, in Mission, and El Castillo, in the Castro district.
Vegans and vegetarians are also catered for across the city, including at Enjoy Vegetarian, where vegetarian meets Chinese, in Chinatown, Golden Era Vegan, in the Civic Center, and the acclaimed Greens Restaurant, overlooking the bay.
When it comes to dessert, Humphry Slocombe, in locations across San Francisco, and Bi-Rite Creamery, in Mission, offer great options for delicious ice cream. Both serve up a variety of unique flavour combinations, with plenty of food for thought when it comes to selecting your scoop of choice.
San Francisco commemorates the life and legacy of civil rights activist Dr Martin Luther King Jr every year on or around Martin Luther King Jr. Day, an American Federal Holiday, which takes place on the third Monday of January. Events, including film, arts and music festivals, and a parade, are held at venues close to the city’s Yerba Buena Gardens, home to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial.
Taking place over a number of days in June, San Francisco’s annual celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender pride features live music, entertainment and a host of other events held at a variety of venues. The festivities culminate in a colourful parade from the city’s Embarcadero to the Civic Center.
Join in the city’s annual Independence Day festivities at Pier 39, with fireworks, live music, food and arts and crafts for all to enjoy.
