This is a five star that deserves the rating, the rooms could do with some maintenance as there were some shabby decor niggles. The public spaces were beautiful and the service very good. I would skip the Rose Garden restaurant if you can, the service is slow and the food only adequate even though they give themselves the airs and graces of a way better restaurant.

We visited the Cliff bar at this stunning, classic hotel in Nov 2024. Although we didn’t stay at the hotel, we were impressed by its beautiful interiors and overall charm. Based on this experience, we’re already planning to stay here for a couple of days next year!
The bar itself was elegantly designed—sophisticated with an amazing sunset view at the outdoor seating area. They were kind enough to prepare a vegetarian pasta that wasn’t on the menu. We also ordered a few drinks, and both were delightful. The pasta was well-prepared, and the drinks complemented the ambiance perfectly.
The service was excellent—attentive and professional, which made the experience even more enjoyable. There was live music and happy hour between 5-6 pm.
The hotel exuded an old-world charm, blending timeless elegance with modern sophistication. Its location was also fantastic, making it even more appealing.
Overall, this was a wonderful experience, and we can’t wait to return for a longer stay next time!

A really great hotel with beautiful gardens and sea views. Our room was spacious and very comfortable and the staff were friendly and always extremely helpful. There are at least two pools and access to the sea. There is a spa with two steam rooms and saunas, also several jacuzzis, inside and out. Breakfast was extensive and there was an impressive array of food available. The public areas of the hotel were peaceful and very comfortable and there are several hotel restaurants available. The location is stunning and convenient for buses or walking into the centre. There are also plenty of other restaurants around too. We enjoyed our stay very much.

Frankly the best service I've experienced in any hotel. They deliver everything you could wish for and then there's more.
Breakfast offerings set the standard and the friendliness of the hotel staff throughout is outstanding.
Just one thing. The USB sockets in the rooms are only 500mA and won't change your smart phone. (They need 2 Amp outlets) Bring your charger.

We stayed at Cliff Bay during our honeymoon to Portugal. The staff was fantastic and the view from our room looking across the bay to Funchal was amazing. The breakfast buffet was also extensive and a great way to start the day. The walk to central Funchal was only about 30 minutes and very pedestrian friendly. The staff was happy to help arrange a taxi if needed.
