The swim out room was excellent. The restaurants were impossible to get into and the food was tasteless. You had to beg for salt. The drinks are watered down which is okay for the 18 year olds.
The wait staff at the pools were great. The staff worked hard and tried but they are super understaffed. The hotel overbooked for the amount of employees.
Bring tons of money to tip. It is expected.
Room service was good if it ever arrived. Book it for about 45 minutes before you actually want it and call once it is late.
The app will not let you book a reservation unless you are upgrading to a $300 extra for dinner.
Get up at 7 to grab chairs by the pool or they all will be gone.
The swamp location is great for a high school trip because they are trapped at the hotel and it is hard for them to waunder off. Security at the gate is good. No one is getting in or out.
Expect to be. Asked to sign up for a spa service 5-10 times a day. They are nice but I am not interested in a $400 massage.
Bring pool floaties with you. They are allowed but they cost $55 at the resort.

Let me start by saying I know nothing in life is perfect but this hotel is an unbelievable disappointment. We are on our third full day here and this whole stay has been terrible.
We ordered room service on night one when we arrived at 10pm, it took 1hr and 40 min to arrive.
Then there is the pools, which do not have anywhere near enough seating. If you want a chair, you have to put your personal belongings on it for the whole day. We did this and still we had staff remove it while we were getting drinks.
Speaking of the drinks, I know resorts water them down but come on…half of them didn’t even have alcohol.
The service both pool side and in restaurants is so slow it feels like they forget about you. Last night at dinner, my gf had to wait 25 just to get a glass of water. For dinners, good luck getting a reservation, unless you’re checking your phone at midnight every night. You won’t be missing much if you don’t get a reservation as the food is a strong 6/10.
The beach is gross, covered in seaweed and cigarette butts.
The staff doesn’t seem to know what’s going on, you could ask them same question to a bunch of them about the hotel and get different answers from all of them. There is no sense of pride here.
The reason I’m writing this currently is because our room just flooded from the ceiling, and I can’t be in there for a bit.
If you are going on a trip, do not come here.

We had an amazing family vacation here! I have a toddler & a teen & it was great for all of us.
The check in process was a bit of a longer process than I would have liked but it was busy & we still had access to the resort while we waited for our room.
The service was great! Food was good! Miss Carolina was amazing with the kids activities at the pool during the day & evenings, my kiddo adored her!
The pools were great, we never had issues finding a spot or chair & the beach was beautiful! It was a week of fun in the sun! We’re already looking at which Royalton resort to stay at next!

I will start with the positives. The beach was beautiful, clean and peaceful. There were several pools which gave us lots of swimming options. The buffet had lots of great options and the a la cart restaurants had a lot of variety. The food was delicious. The taco truck served excellent nachos and burgers. This was a favourite.
The service at this resort was awful. We upgrades to Diamond Club so that we would have access to all the amenities and some extra convince. This was not the case. The check-in process was laborious and confusing. The person at check-in dismissed our questions and provided no information. We were travelling as a group of 3. We had booked a room with 2 beds. When we finally got our room, there was only 1 bed. We were told we could not get a new room. We had to speak to several people before a solution was offered. They brought us a cot. It arrived very late in the evening. This slow service was consistent throughout the week.
The hallways stunk like sewage all week, and there were racoons in the stairwells. The smell was sickening. While housekeeping came daily and the room was clean, the hallways were filthy.
Our room faced the main pool so it was very loud because the entertainment happened there.
Sarah and Oscar are butlers working as part of the Diamond Club. They were kind and helpful. They went above and beyond.
Overall the vacation was relaxing and the hotel is in a beautiful location, but the service is lacking.

Royalton Riviera Cancun – Honest Review
Overall Experience: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆ (3/5)
Two families: Three adults (one senior) & two teens + Two adults & one teen
The Royalton Riviera Cancun offers a visually stunning, well-laid-out resort with great food options, friendly staff, and plenty of pools, but several service and maintenance issues prevent it from being a true luxury experience.
Pros:
✔️ Dining: The steakhouse (small portions but extra food available) and Taj Indian restaurant were surprisingly flavorful. The buffet always had seating, and the coffee shop was excellent, with fast service despite long lines.
✔️ Beach & Pools: The resort actively combs the beach for seaweed (though it returns quickly), and the many pools are nice with good temperature and depth. Bars on the beach are a nice touch.
✔️ Rooms: Our room in Building 9 was quiet, with a huge shower, comfortable king bed, and a deck (though it overlooked construction). Some family members had musty, damp rooms that needed dehumidifiers.
✔️ Amenities: The gym is incredible, and the resort is walkable with beautiful ocean views.
✔️ Towels & Wristbands: No towel card system, which is a plus. The wristband acts as a room key—very convenient.
Cons:
❌ You had to stay up until midnight to get a restaurant reservation in the app
❌ Lounge Chair Chaos: Severe chair shortage—if you weren’t up by 6 AM to reserve a spot, you were out of luck. By 7 AM, all chairs were gone.
❌ Check-in & Room Assignments: Check-in took 3 hours, with a buzzer system that was inefficient. Our group’s rooms were initially in completely different buildings, and it was difficult to change due to capacity issues. We only managed to get into the same building after a lot of pleading. Found out too late that online pre check-in existed—not well promoted.
❌ Time Share Pressure: Very aggressive sales tactics. A “90-minute” presentation dragged on for over 2.5 hours, only made worthwhile by free water park passes; several slides not working and some were painful to slide down for our kids
❌ Smells & Maintenance Issues: The buffet and certain areas near the pool and bathrooms had a horrible sewage smell. We also experienced intermittent running water issues, power outages, and a leaking toilet that was never fixed.
❌ Service & Staffing: Very slow service at bars due to not even nearly enough bartenders, leading to long lines and frequent shortages of ice, cups, and certain alcohol types. Alcohol very watered down; cups were not washed properly/sanitized just dunked in a basin of water!
❌ Evening Entertainment & Activities: Very little entertainment, no staff organizing daytime activities except by the main pool. Evening shows were underwhelming.
Final Verdict:
The Royalton Riviera Cancun has potential but is held back by staffing shortages, maintenance issues, and poor organization. If you go with managed expectations, enjoy decent food, and manage to secure pool chairs early, you may still have a decent stay. However, for the price, there are better-maintained all-inclusive options in Cancun.
Would we return? Unlikely, unless significant improvements are made.
