The Riviera Maya is a coastal stretch south of Cancun on the east coast of Mexico that offers a range of luxurious resorts and places of interest, blessed with white sand beaches and the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea. Playa Del Carmen is the largest of those resorts - a world- renowned destination with first-rate hotels, restaurants, shopping attractions and entertainment facilities making it ideal if you're after a luxury holiday to Mexico.

The Riviera also hosts a number of off-the-beaten-track coastal villages that are perfect for exploration, but the resorts of Akumal and Tulum deserve special mention.

Akumal is south of Playa del Carmen and is a perfect location for family holidays in Mexico. Exceptional hotels, a fabulous beach and a host of activities will keep any family entertained. It also offers great diving and snorkelling opportunities, and is known for its mesmerising marine life and turtles in the waters.

Even further south is the picture-postcard town of Tulum. Famous for its Mayan walled city overlooking a perfect tropical beach, it showcases an idealised version of Mexico at its beautiful best. Bars, restaurants, entertainment and accommodation are available for all budgets in an area that provides a perfect base to explore the full Riviera.

In contrast, Cancun is famed for some of the best nightlife on the planet. A huge tourist destination, its combination of hotels, beaches, casinos, shopping malls and nightclubs keep visitors flocking back. But don’t be fooled; the region is also home to some fascinating historical and wildlife attractions. Trips to Mexico’s untamed jungles run from all the main resorts, while Xel-Ha, the world’s largest natural aquarium, will leave you cherishing the memories of swimming with stingrays, dolphins and turtles in a natural environment.

Mexico’s Caribbean coast offers a range of experiences for travellers of all ages, whether families, couples or single adventurers. Why not experience them for yourself and book a holiday to Mexico in 2017 / 2018?

The Mexican’s eat well, and their food is so tasty that it is now one of the most popular cuisines worldwide, besides the likes of Italian, Indian and Chinese.

Corn is a big player in the food system, which is why you’ll find plenty of dishes utilising this ingredient.

Whether it’s meat or fish tacos which are usually crispy, soft tortillas used in fajitas, or quesadillas which are filled with cheese and then grilled… all heavily feature corn.

Fancy your tortillas baked? Go for enchiladas which are meat or vegetable filled tortillas, rolled and then baked in the oven.

The list could go on, but Mexico also boasts many other foods that are popular worldwide.

Originating in the north of the country is a family favourite in chilli con carne, a stew mixed with beef, chilli peppers, tomatoes and beans.

Speaking of beans, frijoles (Spanish translation) are a staple for many. Used as a main ingredient and also an extra to some of the most popular dishes, they can either be boiled or fried.

Moving on to sauces and not many do it better. Salsa (Spanish for sauce) is a tomato, coriander and onion mix with variable levels of chillies added to alter the heat. It again can be used as a main ingredient or simply an addition to any corn-based dishes.

The same goes for guacamole which mainly consists of smashed avocado, coriander and onion… again with chillies determining the heat. It is a cherished dish which came about in the Aztec period. Nowadays it is used worldwide as a dip or a popular choice with breakfasts and salads.

Mexico is the perfect destination for a beach holiday. From the enchanting shores of the Riviera Maya to the soft white sands of Cancun, this glorious tropical destination is ideal for anyone who dreams of sun-drenched days of fun or relaxation beside glistening Caribbean waters.

With a vast array of luxury hotels and resorts boasting private beachfront locations, travellers can wake up each morning just steps away from the ocean and spend heavenly hours stretched out beneath clear blue skies.

If action and excitement is more your thing, then you’re in luck, as Mexico’s beaches are perfect for water sports, with sailing, fishing, windsurfing and water skiing among the aquatic activities to enjoy in the crystal-clear waters close to shore.

Scuba diving and snorkelling are also popular with a host of wonderful undersea creatures to discover.

As well as breathtaking beaches, Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is equally as blessed with captivating cenotes, vibrant pools of emerald and turquoise waters hidden among the nearby tropical forest. Cenotes are natural sinkholes where a cave ceiling has collapsed, often vividly blue in colour and with tunnels leading off below the surface.
